History

At 1,345 metres, Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles. It is the eroded remains of an ancient volcano that collapsed in on itself around 400 million years ago.

A weather observatory operated on the summit from 1883 to 1904, and its ruins can still be seen. Today the mountain is climbed by well over 100,000 people a year.
