History

The White Cliffs of Dover are made of chalk formed from the remains of tiny sea creatures that settled on the seabed around 70 to 100 million years ago. They face France across the narrowest part of the English Channel.

For centuries they were the first and last sight of England for travellers, and they became a symbol of home and hope during the Second World War. Much of the cliff top is looked after by the National Trust.
