History
Tower Bridge was built between 1886 and 1894 to give East London a crossing over the Thames while still letting tall ships reach the Pool of London. It was designed by Horace Jones and the engineer John Wolfe Barry.
Its two bascules (the lifting halves of the road deck) were first raised by steam-driven hydraulics. Today the high-level walkways, with their glass floors 42 metres above the river, are part of the Tower Bridge exhibition.
