History
Stonehenge was built in stages over many centuries, starting with a circular bank and ditch around 3000 BC. The great sarsen stones were raised around 2500 BC, and the smaller bluestones were brought from the Preseli Hills in west Wales, more than 150 miles away.
Nobody knows for certain why it was built, but the stones line up with the sunrise on the summer solstice and the sunset on the winter solstice, and the site was used for burials. It became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and is cared for by English Heritage.
