History
Cheddar Gorge is a limestone ravine in the Mendip Hills, carved by meltwater during the ice ages. Its cliffs rise to about 137 metres, making it one of the deepest gorges in Britain.
In 1903, Cheddar Man was found in Gough's Cave. At around 9,000 years old, he is Britain's oldest complete human skeleton. The village of Cheddar gave its name to the cheese, which was once matured in the caves.
