History
Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, is a tidal island reached by a causeway that floods twice a day. St Aidan founded a monastery here in 635, and it became a centre of early Christianity in England.
The Lindisfarne Gospels were made here around 700. A Viking raid on the island in 793 is often seen as the start of the Viking Age in Britain.
