History

The Roman emperor Hadrian ordered the wall to be built in AD 122 to mark the northern edge of his empire. It ran for 73 miles from Wallsend on the River Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast.

Forts and milecastles were built along its length, and soldiers from across the empire were stationed there. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and is followed by the Hadrian's Wall Path national trail.
