History

Skellig Michael is a steep rocky island about 12 km off the coast of County Kerry. Monks lived in stone beehive huts near its summit from around the 6th to 8th centuries, reached by more than 600 steps cut into the rock.

It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, and later appeared as Luke Skywalker's island in the Star Wars films. Boats run in summer when the weather allows.
